Let’s take a look at what happens when you skip the evening skin care routine, and why it can help you to make it a habit.

What happens when you leave your makeup on overnight?

Your pores become clogged, which can lead to the formation of microcomedones. Microcomedones attract bacteria to your pores. Once your pores become clogged with bacteria, you are more likely to experience breakouts. The ingredients in your makeup can also cause blemishes, skin imperfections, and premature aging, so it is best that you remove all potential residue before turning in for the night.

There are also free radicals in the air, and keeping your makeup on will increase your exposure. Free radicals cause the healthy collagen in your skin to break down, resulting in fine lines on your face. Also, become aware of how often you touch your face throughout the day. We do it more often than we think and it contributes to dirt and oil build up on our faces.

Keep in mind that while you are sleeping, your skin renews itself. If your skin cannot breathe, it cannot successfully renew.

 

But what if it’s just mascara and eyeliner?

Leaving your eye makeup on at night might not lead to fine lines or acne, but it can lead to other problems. It may not clog your pores, but it can clog the tiny hair follicles and oil glands in your eyelids. Inflammation of these follicles and glands can cause a stye, which is a small red or pink bump that can be quite uncomfortable. Most will go away on their own but some can end up requiring medical attention.

While it is best you remove any makeup you have on before going to sleep, the worst items to leave on your skin are heavy foundations and oil-based primers. Leaving these on can easily cause blackheads, dull skin, and acne.

  • Wash your face with warm water and gentle cleanser
  • Mix things up by adding a face mask or exfoliator
  • Moisturize your skin
  • Put makeup removing wipes by your bedside, just in case you forget here and there (also, add them to your purse for overnight stays)

 

If you want to avoid clogged pores and have brighter, clearer skin, you will want to make sure you are removing your makeup at night. It may seem a bit tedious at first but you can easily create an evening routine that is efficient, relaxing, and keeps your skin healthy!
