After years of laughing, frowning, worrying, and squinting, the skin around the forehead and the eyes develops wrinkles and deep “expression” lines. Botox™ is a purified protein toxin produced by a bacteria (Clostridium Botulinum) which is used to correct facial lines.
What are the treatments like?
A few drops of Botox™ are injected with a tiny needle into the muscle that creates expression lines. Injected Botox™ blocks the nerve pulse from reaching the muscle and as a result, the muscle weakens. Wrinkles in the skin gradually soften and often disappear over a period of time.
Is the treatment painful?
When Botox™ is injected there is an initial minor sting that lasts for a few a seconds. Once the injection is completed, there is usually no discomfort. For patients with sensitive skin, topical anesthetic can be used.
What are the side effects and restrictions?
When the selected number of the units of Botox™ is accurate, the chance of experiencing side effects is minimal. Temporary bruising, slight drooping of the eyelid, and cold like symptoms are rare temporary side effects. Pregnant patients or those with a neurological disease should not be treated.
How soon will I see the results?
The initial effects of Botox™ are usually visible within three days, but the full benefit is noticeable between 10 to 14 days after injection.
How long will the treatments last?
Botox™ usually lasts 3 to 4 months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, Botox™ may begin to last longer, sometimes up to 6 to 8 months.
